The city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located in southern Bavaria, almost on the border with Austria.
It was founded in 1935 from the union of the two cities of Garmisch and Partenkirchen and was the venue for the Olympic Winter Games (1936) and the Alpine Ski World Championships (1978 and 2011). This makes it the most famous ski area in Germany and one of the best known in Europe.
